Happy and Merry
artist: Kateřina Šedá
curator: Vanda Skálová
For the 30th anniversary of Kutná Hora's inscription onto the UNESCO World Heritage List, Kateřina Šedá (1977) has organised a project that, like her previous projects (Bedřichovice Upon Thames, UNES-CO, Brnox, etc.), exists in the space between public art and social architecture.
With her projects, Kateřina Šedá calls attention to the state of apathy in society: people often resign under the weight of their daily responsibilities, and their attention and free time must be truly fought for. The best way to fight is with something bold, something that surprises the public and rouses them from their everyday lethargy.
To this end, Šedá works with and communicates with local communities, just as she did last August in Kutná Hora. The main objective of her new project, which will play out during the Christmas season, is to change the established routines usually associated with this holiday and to imbue the advent season with a new and surprising dimension. Her large-scale participatory project will attempt to activate different groups of the city's residents and to bring them together in a shared activity to which they will contribute as naturally as possible. Her goal is not to replace the town's traditional Christmas celebration, but to add to it and provide it with additional meaning.
