Karel Karlos Šimek

Karel Šimek's first experiments with light date back to 2012, when he began to explore the limits of light as a media message. He is an artist who uses light to shape space and play with its possible perception. His steps have intersected with drama, opera, or ballet in all three Czech National Theatres. As a light designer, he has collaborated with Radim Vizváry for a long time. For several years he has worked as a lighting designer with Daniela Špinar. His work experience also includes cooperation with companies such as Lenka Vagnerová & Company, Spitfire Company, Prague Chamber Ballet, Tantehorse and DEKKADANCERS.

SN 1006
The installation is inspired by a supernova named SN 1006. This type of stellar explosion occurred in the constellation Wolf (Lupus) in 1006 AD. It was one of the brightest supernovae in recorded history and was visible during the daytime. It has been observed by astronomers all over the world, including China, the Islamic world and Europe. The explosion occurred about 7,000 light years away and its remnants are now part of an expanding nebula. Red laser rays characterise the movement of the explosion and the magnificence of the supernova. The site-specific laser installation fills and deepens the entire space of the cathedral, transforming its sacred environment into an astronomical one.
