Jan Kaláb

Jan Kaláb is a Czech artist drawing from the creative roots of graffiti and street art. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. He was one of the founding generation of writers, but gradually took visual culture from the street to prestigious gallery spaces across the world. Street facades and experimental work were replaced by painted canvases of various shapes of his own production. His work is accompanied by a constant exploration of new techniques and structures. Through geometric morphology, precise acrylic painting or layered surfaces, he embarks on an analysis of space within the classical painting. Jan Kaláb's boundless commitment, joy in playful discovery and overcoming his own possibilities in the end lead him to innovate and remove genre boundaries.

Irideus Bulla
Jan Kaláb's sculptural installation Irideus Bulla plays an ambivalent game with the viewer. The structure of geometric abstraction of a mathematically calculated object constructed according to the laws of physics and statics, color harmony, and the rules of perspective is supposed to be static and solid. But these exact parameters are paradoxical: the object does not behave like a cold and rigid monument. On the contrary. It appears as a biological species, a skeleton or a cellular shell still pulsating, breathing, or perhaps even coming to life. The dynamic yet subtle energy of light makes everything even more dramatic. The Irideus Bulla installation offers space for our own imagination. It does not tell us how our world is or should be. It invites us not to be afraid to see the invisible and to perceive harmony even where everyone else sees only chaos at first sight. The author of the music is Petr Kaláb.
